The final presentation will consist of you presenting an ~30m presentation on the selected paper. I will be looking for the following: 10 points – What is the major question being addressed? 10 points – What are the major gaps in knowledge leading up to this paper? 10 points – How does the paper seek to address/fill in those gaps in knowledge? 20 points – What techniques/methods are used to answer the scientific question? This could be set up both in the introduction and for each figure, and may need to be given the paper.
I think it is always best to have a general idea of the approach they are using as well as techniques used for individual experiments/figures. 30 points – Walk me through the major figures in the paper the that directly test the hypothesis (major question). For example, “They did X to ask X.” For each figure please walk me through the rational, the approach, the data, and the conclusion. *Note: you do not need to present every figure in the paper, but should take careful consideration to highlight the most relevant figures. You should, however, be aware of all figures and data, even supplement, because I could ask you about anything. 20 points – What are the major conclusions of the paper? How do these conclusions fill in the previous gaps in knowledge in the field. Do you agree with the conclusions? What don’t you believe? What else would you have liked to see?
