What does the appearance of Mr. Hyde reveal about the culture it represents?

Analyze the monster in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Using Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s concepts outlined in “Monster Culture,” analyze the monster in Stevenson’s novella in terms of how it relates to culture. What does the appearance of Mr. Hyde reveal about the culture it represents? As we discussed in class, this analysis can include everything from the process of transformation Dr. Jekyll undergoes, to his reasons for doing so, to the society with which Mr. Hyde is in tension, and so on. Note: this paper is going to require that you engage substantively with Dr. Jekyll and Cohen’s essay. You will have to be very detailed, specific, and thorough, looking closely at several different sections of the book that we’ve read for class. Avoid general statements and obvious points. Be original, and be specific.
